Ports of Guyana: Where Your Steel Arrives

Almost all heavy cargo for Guyana enters through the Demerara River at Georgetown, then travels on by road or river. Knowing each port's limits early lets us plan member lengths, packing and the container or break-bulk mix around them.

01 Main cargo port

Demerara River · Region 4

Port of Georgetown (Demerara River)

Guyana's principal port, on the east bank of the Demerara near its mouth, with several private wharves for containers, general and bulk cargo. Container and break-bulk shipments for World Steel projects are normally discharged here.

Region 4
02 Oil & gas shore bases

Demerara River · Regions 3 & 4

Demerara River shore bases

Oil and gas supply bases line the river: Guyana Shore Base Inc. (Houston, a 28-acre base for the Liza project in 2021) and the Vreed-en-Hoop Shorebase, opened in January 2025 on Guyana's first artificial island. They serve energy cargo, not general imports.

Oil & gas structures
03 River ports

Demerara River · Region 10

Linden (upper Demerara)

Ocean-going vessels can navigate about 100 km of the Demerara. Linden, Guyana's mining town up-river, is listed among the country's ports and is also reached by the Linden–Soesdyke Highway.

Region 10
04 River ports

Essequibo River · Regions 3 & 7

Parika and Bartica (Essequibo River)

Parika is the river transport hub for the Essequibo islands and the interior; Bartica serves the mining districts up-river. Steel for these areas is usually landed at Georgetown and moved on by road and river.

05 River ports

Berbice River · Region 6

New Amsterdam (Berbice River)

The river port for Berbice. Ocean-going ships can navigate about 150 km of the Berbice River. Industrial estates are planned in Region 6.

Region 6
06 Planned / under study

Berbice River mouth · Region 6

Berbice deep-water port (planned)

A deep-water port is under study at Crab Island or the former CGX shore-base site, with a cost put at US$1–2 billion. In October 2026 a feasibility study was under way; construction has not started.

Guyana market
07 Border crossing

Corentyne River · Region 6

Springlands / Corriverton (Corentyne River)

Ferry crossing to Nieuw Nickerie and South Drain, Suriname. The Corentyne has a maximum draft of about 4.9 m at high tide, so it is a crossing, not a cargo gateway for steel.

Region 6
08 River ports

Kaituma River · Region 1

Port Kaituma (Kaituma River)

Small river port for the north-west. Steel for Barima-Waini normally travels on from Georgetown by coastal and river transport.

Region 1
09 Oil & gas shore bases

Essequibo River · Region 3

Essequibo shore bases

New energy shore bases have been developed on the Essequibo, for example the Isika base reported in 2021 at 330 acres with 460 m of waterfront and a planned 12 m draft channel.

Planning a delivery around Guyana's ports

The Demerara channel and the piers at Georgetown limit the size of ships that can call, so cargo from Asia always arrives on a feeder vessel after transshipment. That shapes three early decisions: the longest member length, the split between containers and flat racks or break-bulk, and the time allowed for the voyage.

We take those decisions with you at quotation stage, so the structure is designed to be shipped, not shipped as an afterthought.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers on scope, design codes, shipping and what happens in Guyana.

Ask an engineer
Which port will my steel arrive at?

Normally the Port of Georgetown on the Demerara River. We agree the port of discharge with you in the quotation. Onward transport to the site is arranged by you or your logistics partner.

Can a ship sail directly from Vietnam to Georgetown?

No. The Demerara channel and the piers limit the size of vessels, so cargo from Asia is transshipped onto a feeder vessel. Port to port, Asia to Georgetown typically takes 35 to 50 days.

How long can steel members be?

It depends on whether they travel in containers, on flat racks or as break-bulk, and on the road or river route to your site. We set the maximum member length at quotation stage and design the splices around it.

Can you deliver to a shore base or a river port?

Deliveries to an oil and gas shore base are arranged with the base operator for energy projects. For river ports such as Parika, Bartica or New Amsterdam, steel is normally landed at Georgetown and moved on by your logistics partner.

Is the Berbice deep-water port open?

Not yet. In October 2026 a feasibility study was under way; the project has not started construction.
