Why steel

Steel superstructures for river, creek and canal crossings

Many roads in Guyana cross rivers, creeks and drainage canals, often where access for heavy equipment is limited. Steel superstructures are fabricated off site, shipped in segments and erected with smaller cranes or launching methods, which shortens work at the crossing.

World Steel fabricates the steel superstructure to the design approved by the bridge engineer of record and the road authority. We do not design road bridges for approval ourselves.

What steel offers for road bridges

  • Lighter superstructures on soft ground
  • Segments fabricated and checked in the factory
  • Shorter work at the crossing
  • Composite steel girder and concrete deck options
  • Galvanized or high-performance coating systems
  • Full inspection and material traceability records

What we fabricate

Road bridge structures we fabricate

Plate girder superstructures

Welded steel girders acting with a concrete deck cast on site.

Rolled beam superstructures

Rolled steel beams for shorter road spans.

Truss bridges

Through or deck trusses where depth below the road is limited.

Cross frames & bracing

Diaphragms, cross frames and lateral bracing to the design.

Bearings & expansion joint steelwork

Steel items to the design; proprietary bearings by specialist suppliers. Pending verification bearing supply options

Replacement superstructures

New steel spans on existing or rebuilt substructures, as designed.

Superstructure options

The bridge engineer of record chooses the system; this table is for early discussion only.

OptionTypical useWhat to consider
Rolled beam + concrete deckShort road spansSimple fabrication; deck cast by the local contractor
Plate girder + concrete deckMedium spansGirder segments spliced on site; camber set in the factory
Through trussLonger spans, limited depth below the roadMore members and connections to erect
Deck trussSpans with good clearance belowTruss below the deck; road on top
Modular panel bridgeTemporary or emergency crossingsCapacity limited to the system design

Spans, live loads and design standards are set by the road authority and the bridge engineer of record. Pending verification design standard and live-load model required for each project

Design considerations

Engineered for Guyana conditions

Durability over water

Coating systems for long life where maintenance access is difficult.

Soft ground & settlement

Lighter superstructures reduce loads on foundations in soft soils.

River levels & debris

Soffit levels and clearances set by the hydraulic design.

Heavy vehicles

Live loads defined by the road authority, including mining and logging trucks on interior roads where relevant.

Remote sites

Segment sizes limited by road, river and ferry access to the site.

Inspection

Welding inspection and NDT to the specification, with records in the dossier.

Specification

Fabrication quality for bridge steel

Bridge steelwork needs tighter control than building steel: material toughness, welding procedures, NDT, camber, trial assembly and coating are all specified. We review the specification and confirm what we meet directly before quoting.

Typically specified

  • Steel grade and toughness requirements
  • Welding procedures and NDT scope
  • Camber and fabrication tolerances
  • Trial assembly of girder splices
  • Coating system and inspection
  • Material certificates and traceability

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers on scope, design codes, shipping and what happens in Guyana.

Ask an engineer
Do you design road bridges?

No. Road bridges are designed by the bridge engineer of record and approved by the road authority. We fabricate to the approved design and prepare shop drawings.

Which design standards can you fabricate to?

We fabricate to the standard named in the approved design and specification. Send it with your enquiry for review. Pending verification design standards required in Guyana

How are long girders shipped?

Girders are fabricated in segments sized for containers or flat racks and spliced on site with bolted or welded splices, as designed.

Do you supply bearings?

Bearings and expansion joints are proprietary items; they can be sourced through specialist suppliers where agreed. Pending verification bearing supply options

Who pours the concrete deck?

The local contractor, to the approved design. We supply shear connectors on the girders where the design requires them.

Can you trial-assemble the bridge before shipping?

Yes, where the specification requires it, girder splices are trial-assembled in the factory.
