Corrosion Protection for Steel Structures in Guyana
Choose the protective system from the actual exposure at your site, not a single rule for the whole country.
Atmospheric corrosion
Steel corrodes when moisture and oxygen are present; salts and pollutants speed the process up. ISO 9223 and ISO 12944-2 classify atmospheric corrosivity into categories from C1 (very low) to C5 (very high) and CX (extreme). The category depends on the local environment: time of wetness, chloride deposition, pollution and sheltering.
Exposure scenarios to assess
| Scenario | Typical drivers | What to assess |
|---|---|---|
| Coastal exposure | Airborne chlorides from the sea, high humidity | Distance from shoreline, prevailing wind, sheltering |
| Industrial exposure | Pollutants, chemicals, process moisture | Nature of processes, internal environment |
| Inland & riverine | Humidity, rainfall | Proximity to rivers, time of wetness |
| Interior of buildings | Condensation, internal processes | Ventilation, heating, contents (e.g. fertiliser, rice) |
Protective systems
Protective paint systems (ISO 12944)
Multi-coat systems (typically primer, intermediate and topcoat) specified by corrosivity category and the required durability range. ISO 12944-1 defines durability ranges of low (up to 7 years), medium (7 to 15 years), high (15 to 25 years) and very high (more than 25 years) until first major maintenance. Durability ranges are not guarantees.
Hot-dip galvanizing (ISO 1461 / ASTM A123/A123M)
Steel is immersed in molten zinc, forming a metallurgically bonded coating that protects inside and out, including edges. ISO 1461 sets minimum coating thicknesses by steel thickness (for example, for steel thicker than 6 mm, a minimum mean coating thickness of 85 µm). Member size is limited by the galvanizing bath dimensions.
Duplex systems
Paint applied over hot-dip galvanizing. Duplex systems are used for aggressive exposures or where colour is required, and typically last longer than either system alone.
Comparing protective systems
| Consideration | Paint system | Hot-dip galvanizing | Duplex |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suitable exposures | Wide range, by specification | Wide range | Aggressive / long life |
| Edge & inside protection | Depends on application | Full immersion coverage | Full |
| Colour | Any | Grey (weathers to matt) | Any |
| Touch-up of damage | Paint repair | Zinc-rich repair | Both |
| Size limits | None | Bath size | Bath size |
Final selection depends on the exposure assessment, required durability, budget and maintenance plan.
Coating inspection and maintenance planning
Coating quality is controlled through surface preparation checks, dry film thickness (DFT) measurement and adhesion testing where specified. Records are included in the quality dossier. After handover, periodic inspection, cleaning of salt deposits on sheltered surfaces and timely touch-up are what keep a coating system performing.
