The accreditation

What AC472 accreditation means

AC472 is the IAS Accreditation Criteria for Inspection Programs for Manufacturers of Metal Building Systems. It was approved by the code officials on the IAS Accreditation Committee in 2008 and replaced the earlier AISC-MB certification for metal building manufacturers in 2009.

An accredited manufacturer has its engineering, material ordering, design and fabrication processes evaluated by a third party. IAS checks that written procedures exist and are followed for acquiring materials, calibrating equipment, welding, designing and inspecting each job, and for training and qualifying the people who do the work.

In the United States, building officials can accept AC472 accreditation as evidence that a manufacturer's in-plant inspection program complies with the code, instead of sending inspectors to the factory. It does not replace inspections at the construction site during erection.

AC472 is an accreditation of the manufacturer's inspection program. Project-specific requirements are still set by the project specification and the engineer of record.

Where AC472 applies in our scope

AC472 is written for metal building systems: pre-engineered buildings with primary frames, secondary members, cladding and accessories designed and supplied as one system. That is the core of what World Steel exports to Guyana.

For other structural steel, such as pipe racks, platforms, bridges and custom fabrication to someone else's design, the same factory, procedures and people are used, and the inspection requirements are agreed in the project ITP.
