Source: Guyana Bureau of Statistics, 2022 Census preliminary report (subject to revision).
Demerara-Mahaica is Guyana's most populous region, with about 40% of the population in the 2022 census. It includes Georgetown, the East Bank and East Coast of Demerara and communities towards the Mahaica River.
The region concentrates government, commerce, the main port on the Demerara River with oil and gas shore bases, and the two international airports: Cheddi Jagan International at Timehri and Eugene F. Correia International at Ogle. The government has named industrial estates at Eccles and Coldingen. Budget 2026 funds the Heroes Highway, the Ogle–Eccles highway, the railway-embankment highway and the Goed Success–Timehri road.
Demand ranges from warehouses, distribution centres and shore-base buildings to commercial, institutional and multi-storey steel frames.
