East Berbice-Corentyne (Region 6) is the eastern region on the Berbice and Corentyne rivers, bordering Suriname, with its capital at New Amsterdam.
Source: Guyana Bureau of Statistics, 2022 Census preliminary report (subject to revision).
East Berbice-Corentyne includes New Amsterdam, Rose Hall, Port Mourant, Corriverton and the Corentyne coast, and a large, sparsely populated interior to the south. Moleson Creek is the ferry crossing to Suriname.
The coast is an agricultural area with sugar and rice. The government has named an estate at Belvedere and plans another industrial estate in Region 6, citing potential for oil refining, alumina, fertiliser and petrochemicals. Budget 2026 funds a four-lane Palmyra–Moleson Creek highway and describes a four-lane, high-span bridge over the Berbice River linking to a new deep-water port in Berbice. A Corentyne River Bridge to Suriname is planned, but in July 2026 its timeline was reported as being reset.
Opportunities include plants and warehouses for new industry and port activity, agricultural buildings, and steelwork for bridges and roads designed by the responsible engineers.
