About the region

Barima-Waini is largely forest and river country with communities along the Barima, Waini, Kaituma and Moruca rivers. Mabaruma is the administrative centre and Port Kaituma is the other main settlement, served by its river port and airstrip.

Its population grew faster than the national average between the 2012 and 2022 censuses. The local economy is based on agriculture, fishing, forestry and small-scale mining. Pending verification current main economic activities and investments

Most building materials reach the region by river or by air, so structures need to be light, bolted and split into pieces that small vessels and local crews can handle.
