Technical introduction

The first question most clients ask is "how much per square metre?" A responsible answer is that the supply cost of a steel building depends on decisions that have not yet been made when that question is asked. This article explains the cost drivers so you can compare offers on equal terms and control the budget from the start.

The engineering challenge

A steel building for Guyana is supplied from one country and built in another. The total installed cost combines the steel supply, which World Steel prices, with costs incurred in Guyana: shipping and port charges, import duties and taxes, foundations, erection and local approvals, which are priced by others.

Import duty and tax rates must be confirmed with the Guyana Revenue Authority or a customs broker for each project.

Design considerations that move the price

  • Span and height: steel weight grows quickly with clear span and eave height. Use the span the operation needs.
  • Loads: wind criteria, cranes, hung services and mezzanines all add steel. Define them accurately rather than adding generous margins.
  • Bay spacing: fewer, heavier frames or more, lighter frames: there is an optimum for each building.
  • Envelope: insulated panels cost more than single-skin sheets but can save on comfort and condensation problems.
  • Corrosion protection: the right system for the site avoids expensive maintenance later.

Recommended approach

  1. Write down the operational requirements: use, clear height, equipment, cranes, doors, future expansion.
  2. Confirm the design basis (code, wind criteria) with your engineer.
  3. Ask suppliers to quote on the same specification and scope, including what is excluded.
  4. Compare total installed cost, not just the supply price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers on scope, design codes, shipping and what happens in Guyana.

Ask an engineer
Can you give a price per square metre?

Only as a rough budget after we know span, height, loads, location and specification. A firm price needs a design.

Does a lighter building mean a cheaper building?

Usually it reduces steel cost, but erection, shipping and durability also matter. We optimise the whole.

Are shipping costs included in your quotation?

It depends on the agreed Incoterms. Our proposal states clearly what is and is not included.
