Guyana Building Standards & Approvals
This page is an orientation, not legal advice. Confirm requirements with the relevant Guyanese authority for every project.
Four kinds of requirement
Clients often mix these up. We keep them separate.
| Type | What it is | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Mandatory local requirements | Laws, regulations and approvals required in Guyana | Building permits, planning approval Pending verification list the authorities and instruments that apply, e.g. Central Housing & Planning Authority, local municipal or Neighbourhood Democratic Council approvals |
| Accepted international standards | Design and fabrication standards accepted by the engineer of record or specified by the client | e.g. AISC 360, ASCE 7, Eurocode 3, AWS D1.1 |
| Manufacturer certifications | Certifications held by the fabricator | e.g. ISO 9001, EN 1090 (see Certifications) |
| Project-specific requirements | Client, EPC or lender specifications | Oil & gas company standards, inspection requirements |
Building regulations and planning
Pending verification summarise the national building code status in Guyana (e.g. the Guyana National Building Code / Guyana National Bureau of Standards publications) with official references and dates
Pending verification summarise the planning and building permit process, responsible authorities in Georgetown and other regions, and typical documents required
Structural design and engineering approvals

World Steel provides design documentation to support the review by the project's engineer of record. Where a locally registered engineer must take responsibility for the design, that engineer is appointed by the client or a local partner.
Fire safety
Pending verification summarise fire safety approval requirements and the responsible authority (e.g. Guyana Fire Service) for commercial and industrial buildings
Fire protection of structural steel, where required, can be achieved with intumescent coatings, boards or sprays specified by the designer.
Import requirements
Pending verification summarise import procedures for structural steel, documents required by the Guyana Revenue Authority, and any standards marking or inspection requirements
