Essequibo Islands-West Demerara (Region 3) lies between the Essequibo and Demerara rivers, across the river from Georgetown, and is home to the Gas-to-Energy project at Wales.
Source: Guyana Bureau of Statistics, 2022 Census preliminary report (subject to revision).
Essequibo Islands-West Demerara includes the West Bank and West Coast of Demerara, the Essequibo islands such as Leguan and Wakenaam, and the river hub of Parika. Vreed en Hoop, opposite Georgetown, is the regional capital. Its population grew by about a third between the 2012 and 2022 censuses.
The region hosts the Gas-to-Energy project at Wales: a planned 300 MW power plant and a natural gas liquids facility, with the first 228 MW phase targeted for the end of 2026. The government plans an industrial estate at Wales for gas-based industries such as cooking gas and fertiliser. The new four-lane Demerara River Bridge links the West Bank to the East Bank (Region 4).
Opportunities include warehouses and workshops for the energy supply chain, plants on the planned estate, and buildings for the fast-growing communities on the West Bank and West Coast.
