About the region

Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo is the largest region by area. Lethem sits on the Takutu River, where a bridge opened in 2009 links Guyana with Brazil. Annai and Aishalton are other centres with airstrips.

Cattle ranching and agriculture on the savannahs, cross-border trade and tourism shape the economy. The government has developed an industrial estate at Lethem. Budget 2026 plans completion of the Linden–Lethem corridor in 2026, which would give the region a paved road link to the coast and a land route to northern Brazil.

Warehouses and logistics buildings for cross-border trade, agricultural buildings, and community buildings are the most relevant structures.
