Honouring workers
Labour Day, on 1 May, is a national public holiday in Guyana. Trade unions and workers mark the day with marches and rallies, particularly in Georgetown, and with speeches about workers' rights and the country's development.
Guyana's labour movement has a long history, and the day recognises the people whose work builds the country, including in construction, transport, mining, agriculture and energy.
