Remembering the journeys that shaped Guyana
Arrival Day, on 5 May, commemorates the arrival of indentured labourers in British Guiana. The first ships carrying indentured workers from India arrived on 5 May 1838. Labourers also came from Portugal (Madeira), China and other places.
The day honours their contribution and celebrates the diversity of modern Guyana, where the descendants of people from many parts of the world live together.
How it is marked
Commemorative ceremonies, cultural shows, music and dance, historical exhibitions and reenactments of the arrival are held in different parts of the country.
