Christmas in Guyana
Christmas Day is a national public holiday and one of the biggest celebrations of the Guyanese year. Preparations begin weeks before, with house cleaning, new curtains, decorations and lights.
Pepperpot, black cake and garlic pork
Christmas morning traditionally starts with pepperpot, the national dish of meat slow-cooked in cassareep, served with bread. Black cake, garlic pork, ginger beer and sorrel drink are Christmas favourites. Families attend church services and visit relatives and friends throughout the season.
