Celebrating Guyana's First Peoples
September is Amerindian Heritage Month in Guyana, celebrating the culture, history and contribution of the country's Indigenous Peoples. Guyana is home to nine Indigenous nations: the Arawak (Lokono), Akawaio, Arecuna, Carib (Kalina), Macushi, Patamona, Wai Wai, Wapishana and Warrau (Warao).
Heritage Village and community events
Each year a community is chosen as the Heritage Village and hosts celebrations. Events across the month include cultural performances, traditional food such as cassava bread, pepperpot and tuma pot, crafts, and exhibitions.
