Republic Day and Mashramani
On 23 February 1970 Guyana became a Co-operative Republic. Republic Day is a national public holiday and is celebrated with Mashramani, Guyana's best-known national festival.
The word Mashramani is generally attributed to an Amerindian language and is usually translated as "celebration after hard work". The festival brings together all of Guyana's peoples in a carnival-style celebration of national pride.
Costume bands, music and the float parade
In the weeks before Republic Day, competitions for calypso, steel pan, chutney and costume design are held across the country. On the day itself, costumed bands and decorated floats parade through Georgetown, with music, dancing and crowds lining the streets. Many regions hold their own celebrations as well.
